What Nobody Tells You About Pregnancy Yoga (Until You Try It)

It's not what it looks like, it's how it makes you feel afterwards.
Most people come to pregnancy yoga for one of three reasons:
Back or hips are starting to ache
Feeling anxious about birth
Wanting to do something good for your body in pregnancy
The hidden benefit: feeling calmer in your own body
Pregnancy can be a strange mix of excitement and uncertainty. You might feel connected one day and overwhelmed the next. You might feel strong one week and exhausted the next.
It's time each week to slow down, breathe, and notice what’s happening in your body without judgement. For many people, that alone changes how they experience pregnancy. The more relaxed we are the more our body produces oxytocin which is a huge player in birth. If you can relax and focus on your breathing, you should find your birthing experience much smoother.
It’s not just movement — it’s preparation
Yes, we move in class.
But we also talk about:
how to support your body as it changes
how to manage common pregnancy discomforts
how breathing can help during labour
what helps you feel grounded when things feel intense
Because birth isn’t just a physical event — it’s also something your nervous system experiences. And one of the most useful things you can learn in pregnancy is how to stay calm when things feel uncertain or intense.
The part people don’t expect: the community
One of the biggest surprises for many people is not the yoga.
It’s the other women in the room.
At some point, you realise:
you’re not the only one feeling anxious
you’re not the only one with questions
you’re not the only one lying awake at 3am wondering what birth will be like
And that quiet sense of “oh, me too” can be incredibly grounding.
Many women say the friendships they make in pregnancy yoga end up being just as important as the class itself. I often get messages or pictures from women that have been to my classes together, still meeting up years later and saying how much it changed their experience and how much more supported and less alone they felt during pregnancy and postpartum. I believe it's so important to have that network of people at the same stage as you. Chances are if you're experiencing a challenge, someone else is too.
So what actually happens in a class?
Every class is a mix of:
gentle, pregnancy-safe movement
breathing techniques for calm and labour
space to slow down and connect with your baby
guided relaxation
birth or postnatal discussion with lots of shared experiences and laughs
Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced.
You can modify everything to suit how you’re feeling that day.
And you don’t need any yoga experience at all.
If you’re wondering whether it’s for you…
Pregnancy yoga tends to suit you if:
you want to feel more confident in your body
you’re looking for a calmer way to prepare for birth
you want to reduce tension, aches or stress
you’d like to meet other local mums
you want a weekly pause in the noise of pregnancy or busy work/family life, trying to juggle it all
If you’d like to try it
I run pregnancy yoga classes in Edinburgh (Corstorphine and Davidson’s Mains), designed to support you through pregnancy, birth and beyond. Yes, if you like you can try a class first :-)
You are welcome whether you've been practising for years or have never been to a yoga class before! Please don't hesitate to message with with any questions or concerns and I'd be happy to help.
